Gavin Hunt has been appointed as the new head coach of Chippa United ahead of the 2021/22 season.
Hunt replaces Lehlohonolo Seema at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Seema left the Gqebera-based outfit after successfully helping them avoid relegation.
Chippa finished last season in 15th spot on the DStv Premiership standings, but ousted Royal AM and Richards Bay FC in the playoffs to maintain their top-flight status.
Hunt, 56, is one of the most successful coaches in South Africa having won four league titles.
The former Seven Stars, Hellenic, Black Leopards, Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits head coach was sacked by Kaizer Chiefs in May.
“I don’t have an ego, I’m really looking forward to the project. It is going to take a lot of work, it is going to take a lot of discussions at all levels and we need to create a good foundation. First, we need to get the team competitive and that is the most important thing,” said Hunt.
“We all want to win, but we can certainly be more competitive – there is no two ways about that – and we will have a team that the people in the area can be proud of. We need to tap into the market here, I know there is a huge market. A lot of good players that have played for me over the last 20 years have come from this area. One step at a time.”
Daine Klate has been tipped as an early favourite to join Hunt’s technical team as assistant coach.
