George Atangana, the agent of Ivorian midfielder Franck Kessie, says his client will only leave Italian giants AC Milan if a “coup d’etat” hits the club.

The 24-year-old Elephants star will be out of contract at the San Siro in just under a year, leaving Milan desperate to seek a new deal to ensure he does not walk out of the club for free as Gigio Donnarumma and Hakan Calhanoglu did last month.

Their contracts expired on June 30, with the goalkeeper heading to French side PSG, and Calhanoglu jumping ship to Serie A champions Internazionale.

Milan are now in talks to extend Kessie’s contract, but an agreement appears to be far away. The African midfielder is on a €2.2m-per-year deal at the San Siro and, according to, is requesting a sizeable pay rise.

Milan have reportedly offered Kessie €3.8m per year in previous negotiations, but his agent is aiming for something more in the region of €6m per year.

Despite this, Atangana told La Gazzetta dello Sport that “only a coup d’état can send The President [Kessie’s nickname at the club] away from Milan.”

Kessie has been included in the Ivory Coast squad for the Tokyo Olympics, ruling him out of the Rossoneri’s pre-season campaign.
