Kennedy Mweene has indicated that he is going to play a role in the backroom staff of Chipolopolo’s goalkeeping department.

The 36-year-old 2012 AFCON winner and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper has returned to the Zambia fold after a two-year hiatus following his call-up for the defending champions’ 2021 COSAFA Cup campaign in South Africa at Nelson Mandela Bay from July 6-18.

“It is not a wrong call I made to come back to the national team. There is a reason why I am here,” Mweene said.

“One thing I can say is, it is not about Kennedy but the country and going forward as well.

“It won’t be about me but about the country; the country comes first and for me that was the most important thing to honour the call up.

“At the end of the day it wouldn’t be good because wherever I go, when I hear people talking about my country, the way the team is and people saying, ‘You, your national team this’, it hurts me.

“But we cannot fix things in one day.”

Mweene’s last call-up was on November 18, 2018 in a 2019 AFCON qualifier 1-0 away defeat to Mozambique.
