Striker Justin Shonga is hoping his three goals for Chipolopolo at the 2021 COSAFA Cup are a sign of better things to come after a protracted rough phase for him on the pitch.

Shonga’s poor form from Orlando Pirates has carried over to his new club Cape Town City FC but has ignited some sparks while on national duty at the ongoing COSAFA Cup.

On Tuesday, Shonga inspired Chipolopolo to victory with a brace in a 2-1 Group A victory over Botswana in which he scored a superb free-kick in the 20th minute before completing his brace with an 81st minute penalty.

“I think it is going to motivate me and it is going to give me a bit of confidence,” Shonga said.

“I will keep on working hard because I have had a bad season-even the previous season-and so this is a relief for me to gain my confidence as I go back to the club and also as I continue playing for my nation.”

Shonga’s brace also propelled Chipolopolo to their first Group A win after losing their opening two matches.

The defending COSAFA Cup champions kicked off their Group A campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Lesotho on July 8 in a match where Shonga scored the lone goal.

Zambia followed that up on July 10 with a 1-0 loss to Eswatini.

“As a team, we have been trying to work hard because it took a long time for us to get to know each other,” Shonga said.

“It wasn’t easy for us because we started on a bad note in this tournament but we managed to win one game although we haven’t done well in the last two games.”
