Zambia international Fashion Sakala’s delayed arrival at Rangers FC has been explained by club manager Steven Gerrard.

The 24-year-old striker, who began his career at Zambian club Nchanga Rangers in 2015, signed a pre-contract to join the Scottish giants in May 2021.

Sakala had established himself as one of the top strikers in the Belgian Pro League as he scored 16 goals in 33 matches for KV Oostende during the 2020/21 campaign.

The Chipata-born player was not able to make it to pre-season training with Rangers due to problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and passport issues according to Gerrard.

“We’ve got some passport and Covid-19 issues to get through first but he’s [Sakala] very excited to join us as well,” Gerrard said on the club’s official website.

“We need to add to it, so we’re actively working hard to bring some good players in alongside the recruitment already done in Jack [Simpson], Scott [Wright], Nnamdi [Ofoborh] and Fashion [Sakala] will join us in the coming days.”

Sakala moved to Europe in February 2017 where he signed a three-year contract with the Russian Premier League club FC Spartak Moscow from Zambian club Zanaco.

The speedy striker, who never made a competitive appearance for Spartak’s first team, signed a three-year contract with Oostende in July 2018.

He has scored once in 14 international matches for Zambia.
