Ahmed Hegazi, captain of the Egyptian Men’s Football team for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games, says that their goal is to reach the knockout phase of the competition.

The young Pharaohs, who will be without star man Mohamed Salah, face a tough Group C campaign which will see them come up against Spain (July 22), Argentina (July 25) and Australia (July 28).

“I am so happy that I was picked by the coaching staff. It is a huge honour for me to participate in the Olympics for the second time in my career after 2012 in London,” said Hegazi, as quoted by Egypt Today.

“We have many good players in the team, we know that we will face big teams like Spain, Argentina and Australia in the group stage but we will take the games step by step.

“Our first target is to reach the second round. We will fight to go as far as we can in the competition.”

Attacker Ramadan Sobhi, meanwhile, added that the Egyptian team is confident of success at Tokyo 2020.

“We have been working for this for the last three years and we are ready. It is different than the U-23 AFCON [Africa Cup of Nations] that we won at home. It is a tough group but we are confident,” said the 24-year-old.

The Men’s tournament will also feature South Africa and Ivory Coast, while Africa’s representative in the Women’s tournament is Zambia.
