Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana says Michael Essien helped convince him to sign for French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais.
The 19-year-old attacker signed a five-year deal with Rennes earlier this month, completing a reported €20 million transfer from Danish side Nordsjaelland.
The Ghanaian could have chosen moves to Dutch giants Ajax or even Premier League club Manchester United, but was convinced to take up the Ligue 1 offer after talking with Essien, who currently works on Nordsjaelland’s coaching staff.
The issue of regular playing time – something the teenager is more likely to have at Rennes – was a key factor in his decision.
“I talked to Essien about it all. He told me about Ligue 1. It is one of the strongest leagues in Europe, so I see it as a good opportunity for me,” Sulemana is quoted by Tribal Football.
“I will get playing time in Rennes, and probably more than I would get most other places.”
Essien played in Ligue 1 with SC Bastia and Olympique Lyonnais in the early 2000s and won two French championships with the latter club.
Sulemana will hope to hit the ground running for Rennes, who open their 2021-22 Ligue 1 campaign with a clash at home to RC Lens on Sunday 8 August.
