Chipolopolo striker Fashion Sakala made a winning but quiet Scottish Premier League debut for champions Glasgow Rangers on Saturday.
The SPL champions kicked off their title defence when they collected an almost effortless 3-0 home win over Livingston at Ibrox.
Sakala started his second successive match for Rangers since scoring on July 25 in a 2-1 pre-season victory over Real Madrid at the same venue.
But Sakala had a modest day on his competitive debut, with his best chance from a close-range opportunity coming in the 28th minute that was easily gathered on the near-post by Livingston’s Polish goalkeeper Maksymillian Stryjek.
Sakala’s chance came 20 minutes after Ianis Hagi put Rangers ahead with a great volley from inside the box, but the Romanian played no further part in the match after he limped-off with an injury in the 31st minute.
The Zambia striker later on briefly sprung to life in time-added-on of the first half with a blistering run on the far left flank, but his long cross was easily intercepted by Stryjek.
Sakala later made way for Kemar Roofe in the 70th minute.
Roofe then repaid coach Steven Gerrard’s faith in him when he scored Rangers final goal in the 90th minute.
His goal came 12 minutes after Scott Wright, who replaced Hagi in the first half, netted the second with a fine effort with the outside of his boot in the 78th minute.
Sakala is back in action this Tuesday when Rangers visit Sweden to face Malmo in a 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League third round, first leg tie.
