There was no joy on Tuesday night for Chipolopolo striker Fashion Sakala on his UEFA Champions League debut, when Glasgow Rangers’ push for a group stage qualification suffered a setback away in Sweden.
The Scottish champions lost 2-1 away to their Swedish opponents Malmo in a third round, first leg fixture.
Sakala started the match from the bench and came on in the 63rd minute for Cedric Itten after Malmo had taken a 2-0 lead through Soren Rieks in the 47th minute and Veljko Birmancevic in the 49th minute.
The Chipolopolo striker had one great opportunity in the 79th minute but sent his header wide of the target.
It took a stoppage time goal from Steven Davis to narrow the score line that Rangers will take into the final leg on August 10 at Ibrox.
The winner over both legs will face Greek champions Olympiakos or Bulgarian side Ludogoret in the pre-group stage round to be played over two legs on August 17/18 and August 24/25.
Rangers are seeking their first UEFA Champions League group stage appearance since the 2010/2011 season.
