Beston Chambeshi has trimmed his home-based Chipolopolo team from 31 to 22 players as they prepare to return for training camp in Lusaka this weekend after the August 12 Zambian General Elections.

The nine axed call-ups include three high-profile players and top of the list is striker Alex Ngonga who was making his first return to the fold since 2018 after his impressive season at Nkana where his 9 goals helped save them from relegation.

The other two high profile names axed are Buildcon defender Isaac Shamujompa who has just made his way back into action after a long injury layoff and Power Dynamos midfielder Spencer Sautu who was one of stand-out players under ex-coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic.

Chambeshi has also released some junior call-ups.

Zesco United’s midfield prospect Chanda Mukuka has also failed to make the cut together with the three Zambia Under-17 call-up’s  Julius Kumwenda, Joseph Sabobo Banda and Francis Mutalange who are all from Athletico Lusaka. But the trio’s Zambia Under-17 captain and defender Miguel Chaiwa has kept his place together with Napsa Stars’ teenage striker Jimmy Mukeya.

Meanwhile, midfielder Benson Sakala, who left Power Dynamos in the off-season after six years at the Kitwe club, has been added to the list after he was left out of the first week of camp.

Chipolopolo on Monday wrapped-up a preliminary five-day training camp in Lusaka.

The 22 players will reconvene on August 15 in Lusaka and later be joined by the yet to be named foreign-based call-ups for next month’s FIFA  World Cup Qatar 2022 Group B qualifiers against Mauritania on September 3 away in Nouchakoutt and Tunisia at home on September 5 in Ndola.
