Baroka FC lead the way following the opening weekend of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season.

Bakgaga are one of five teams to register a win on matchday one, with goals from Manuel Kambala and Evidence Makgopa leading the Limpopo club to a 2-0 win over top-flight newbies Marumo Gallants.

Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off their title defence with a 1-0 win over AmaZulu in Friday’s only fixture. Themba Zwane scored the opening goal of the season to get the Brazilians off to a winning start.

Five matches followed on Saturday with Baroka FC amongst the winners. Elsewhere, Golden Arrows claimed a 2-1 win over KwaZulu-Natal rivals Maritzburg United on the back of goals from Siboniso Conco and Siphamandla Sabelo.

Chippa United head coach Gavin Hunt got off to a winning start with a 1-0 win at last season’s GladAfrica Championship winners Sekhukhune United, with Veluyeke Zulu emerging as the unlikely hero for the Chilli Boys in Tembisa.

Cape Town City were held to a 0-0 draw by SuperSport United at Athlone Stadium while 10-man Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC played to a 2-2 stalemate. Ntsikelelo Nyauza saw red for the Buccaneers.

On Sunday, Swallows FC scored in the final minute of stoppage-time to condemn Royal AM to a 1-0 defeat at Dobsonville Stadium.  Strydom Wambi scored in the 93rd minute of the match to stun the visitors in their first top-flight match following Shauwn Mkhize’s purchase of the now defunct Bloemfontein Celtic.

In the final match of the weekend, Kaizer Chiefs and TS Galaxy played to a 0-0 draw in a dull affair at Mbombela Stadium.

The action will resume in midweek with eight matches scheduled across Tuesday and Wednesday.
