Zesco United coach Mumamba Numba has spoken for the first time about his club-versus-country situation that has seen him skip Chipolopolo Zambia bench duty.

Numba was appointed as Chipolopolo coach Beston Chambeshi’s assistant in late July but had not yet reported for duty because of pressing domestic and continental obligations at Zesco.

Chipolopolo are currently in Morocco where they are holding a 10-day training camp in transit to Mauritania to play a FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group B qualifier against the hosts on September 3.

“FAZ and Zesco had to agree on something so that I am at least with the club especially that we are in the preparatory stage of our competitions,” Numba said.

“So, Zesco got permission for me from FAZ to be excused so that I could be with the club so that we can prepare our team for the competitions ahead of us.

“We are in the CAF games, which is also a national issue, that is why we thought of being here so that at least we can work together with my colleagues to prepare the team.”

Zesco kick off the 2021/2022 campaign on August 28 when they face Lusaka Dynamos in the season-opening Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Memorial Charity Shield final in Lusaka.

Thereafter, Zesco will be on the road to Eswatini to play Royal Leopards in a 2021/2022 CAF Champions League first round, first leg tie on September 11.
