Nigeria national team manager Gernot Rohr has revealed that he will stick with the tried and tested for the Super Eagles’ upcoming 2022 World Cup Qualifiers.
Nigeria will open their Group C campaign with matches against Liberia in Lagos and Cape Verde in Mindelo on 3 and 6 September respectively.
German tactician Rohr will continue his faith in the group of players that secured qualification for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, according to Punch.
This means that the trio of Ademola Lookman, Ovie Ejaria and Tosin Adarabioyo, who have recently earned clearance from FIFA to represent Nigeria, are likely to be overlooked.
The same likely applies to in-form players Sadiq Umar of Almeria and Union Berlin forward Taiwo Awoniyi.
Rohr said he has good players at his disposal and wouldn’t consider bringing in any new players at the moment to disrupt the team’s chemistry.
“We have a team that we trust,” Rohr said. “Bringing in new players to the team at this time of the season is not the best moment because we will only have one or two training sessions to prepare for a match.”
Nigeria are looking to secure qualification for a fourth successive World Cup and a seventh overall, having previously appeared at the 1994, 1998, 2002, 2010, 2014 and 2018 finals.
