Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns both failed to record wins on matchday two of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season on Tuesday evening.
Pirates’ slow start to the new term continued when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Marumo Gallants, who were keen to secure their first-ever win in the South African top-flight league.
The result at Peter Mokaba Stadium means Pirates have now gone three competitive matches without a win at the start of the new campaign.
The stalemate against Gallants followed a defeat to Swallows FC in the MTN8 quarterfinals and a 2-2 draw in their league opener at home to Stellenbosch FC this past weekend.
The draw left Pirates and Gallants placed sixth and 12th respectively on the league standings.
Meanwhile, Sundowns were frustrated by Chippa United in a match that ended in a 0-0 draw at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Sundowns, who are the reigning DStv Premiership champions, were hoping to make it three wins in a row in the current campaign having defeated Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu FC.
However, the Tshwane giants were frustrated by a stubborn Chippa side that had secured a 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United last weekend.
The result left the Chippa and Sundowns placed at the top and second respectively on the league standings – level on points (four).
