A busy afternoon of football in South Africa’s DStv Premiership has seen Stellenbosch FC become the surprise new log leaders, while heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs suffered a shocking thrashing at home to rookies Royal AM.

Stellies claimed the bragging rights in their derby away to Cape Town City at the Athlone Stadium, winning 3-0 thanks to goals from Alan Robertson and Judas Moseamedi (two) to claim top spot on goal difference.

Elsewhere, Royal AM secured the most famous victory in their club history, thrashing Kaizer Chiefs 4-1 at FNB Stadium thanks to a brace from the in-form Victor Letsoalo, an own goal from Sibusiso Mabaliso and a beautiful late strike from Mfundo Thikazi.

The embarrassing defeat is a second in succession for the Amakhosi, who have dropped to 12th place on the log.

By contrast, the early kick-off saw Orlando Pirates put on their best display of the season thus far, defeating Chippa United 3-1 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to go top of the log for a couple of hours, before Stellies’ heroics knocked them down a spot.

Coming from a goal down, the Buccaneers claimed victory thanks to three superbly executed strikes from Tshegofatso Mabasa, Abel Mabaso and Goodman Mosele.

The Chilli Boys, who opened the scoring through Phakamani Mahlambi, drop to 10th on goal difference after a second successive league defeat.

Saturday also saw Baroka FC claim a 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United in Polokwane – thanks to a strike from Evidence Makgopa – to go to fifth spot on the log.

The weekend’s DStv Premiership action continues on Sunday 19 September with Swallows FC hosting SuperSport United and TS Galaxy visiting Mamelodi Sundowns.
