Royal Leopards coach Edwin Matsebula believes his sides’ elimination of Zesco United has made their ambitions of CAF Champions League group stage qualification very easy.
The Eswatini champions beat Zesco 1-0 in the first leg on September 11, and despite losing 2-1 away in the final leg in Ndola on September 18, Leopards ensured they progressed to next month’s pre-group stage on away goals rule.
Matsebula described the result against Zambia’s most successful continental campaigner as a giant-killing act.
“For us it was very important to qualify, I don’t see our next opponents as strong as Zesco who are one of the biggest teams in the Southern African region,” Matsebula said.
“With us, beating Zesco we have done ourselves a big favour. So we are going back home to prepare for our next opponents accordingly then our target is to get into the group stage.”
Leopards face Angolan club Sagrada Esperanca away in the first leg on October 16 and host the Luanda club on October 23 as they eye their debut group stage appearance to emulate Mbabane Swallows.
The Eswatini side denied Zesco the prospect of extending their Zambian continental record to six CAF competitions group stage appearances.
Zesco’s domestic rivals Nkana and Zanaco trail on three group stage appearances each.
