A busy afternoon and evening of DStv Premiership matches across South Africa was headlined by a 1-1 draw between Cape Town City and Orlando Pirates.
The evening game in the ‘Mother City’ ended all square, with the Buccaneers leading early on through captain Happy Jele, only for the Citizens to hit back in the second half through a Mduduzi Mdantsane penalty. The result sees the Soweto side in fifth place on nine points (four adrift of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who now have a game in hand) and the Cape club in 11th on six points.
In the pick of afternoon matches, Kaizer Chiefs’ sluggish start to the season continued when they were held 1-1 away at AmaZulu, and even that result flattered the Soweto giants, who needed a controversial injury-time penalty, scored by Keagen Dolly, to salvage a point.
An angry Usuthu, who scored through Luvoyo Memela early in the second half, were left to rue their missed chances… and point accusations at the referee.
Elsewhere, Chippa United and SuperSport United played to a goalless stalemate in the Eastern Cape and TS Galaxy’s winless start was extended to six matches when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Sekhukhune United, who struck on 79 minutes through Pogiso Mahlangu.
The other late kick-off saw Stellenbosch FC miss the chance to go top of the log when they were held 1-1 at a wet and windy Peter Mokaba Stadium by Baroka FC.
The Maroons, who remained unbeaten with the result, opened the scoring through Ashley Du Preez early on, but were quickly pegged back by Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele’s Bernard Bobete.
The DStv Premiership’s weekend action wraps up with a trio of matches on Sunday 3 October, headlined by champions Sundowns hosting Swallows FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane.
