Zanaco coach Kelvin Kaindu says it is a huge relief to finally record their first FAZ Super League win of the 2021/2022 season.
Zanaco on Saturday ended their four-match winless start to the 2021/2022 season with a 1-0 home win over their big rivals from the Copperbelt, Nkana.
The victory saw Zanaco move four places from bottom of the table to number 15 thanks to a 75th minute goal scored by ex-Nkana winger Ackim Mumba following a sweeping counter attack who left three Nkana defenders in his wake en route to beating goalkeeper Kelvin Malunga.
“Yes, I think when you start slow and when you get a victory when you need it the most it gives you an advantage,” Kaindu said.
“We didn’t start well and we were down there on the log and I think 3 points, especially when other teams in the league are not playing, it definitely pushes us up somewhere on the table.”
Zanaco’s victory in this rescheduled Week 2 fixture comes after they began the league campaign with two defeats that were followed by successive draws.
The match was one of three rescheduled matches played by teams that missed Week 1 and 2 of the season due to their continental obligations.
“But I think there is still a lot of work to do but we are happy with the way we scored because that is what we did in training and at the end of the day we managed to get a goal from that,” Kaindu said.
Zanaco are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Sudan to face El Merreikh on October 16 in a CAF Champions League pre-group stage first leg match.
