Legendary Cameroonian striker Patrick Mboma has picked his favourites to win the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

The continental tournament is set to be held in Mboma’s home country between 9 January and 6 February having been postponed from 2021 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Algeria are the reigning African champions having won the 2019 AFCON tournament in Egypt after defeating Senegal in the final

Mboma, who helped Cameroon clinch the 2000 and 2002 AFCON titles, believes Algeria are the favourates to win next year’s trophy followed by Senegal.

“Defending champions Algeria are favorites. After that, Senegal follows suit. I think they are the two strongest nations presently,” Mboma told Kick442.

“Algeria have shown their strength with its invincibility series…

“Senegal has a lot of individual talents and I think [head coach] Aliou Cisse is capable of building a powerful collective squad.”

Algeria are currently the best African team as they have gone 31 matches without tasting defeat – recording 23 wins and eight draws.

While Senegal have been dominant in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying group (Group H) having won all of their first four matches.
