Mamelodi Sundowns continued their dominance of South Africa’s DStv Premiership after a set of four midweek catch-up matches, while Orlando Pirates were unable to get the better of hosts Maritzburg United.
Wednesday’s early kick-off had Sundowns re-established a four-point lead over nearest chasers SuperSport United at the top of the standings after a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
The result, secured by a goal from Gaston Sirino in the second half, saw the Brazilians claim a sixth win from seven outings and keep up their record of not having conceded a goal in the league this season. In fact, ‘Downs have equalled a PSL-era record of 10 straight clean sheets (including three at the back end of last season) held by Wits University and set in 2003.
Abafana Bes’thende, meanwhile, were handed a first home loss of the league season and dropped to eighth place on goal difference.
The early-evening game at the Harry Gwala Stadium ended 0-0 between Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates.
The Team of Choice were able to weather the Buccaneers’ storm in the first half and also shrugged off playing the last quarter of the game with 10 men after a red card for Brandon Theron.
The result sees Pirates move to sixth place on the log on 10 points, while United are five places and three points further back.
Tuesday’s matches saw the bottom two of Marumo Gallants and TS Galaxy continue their winless starts to the season. Galaxy were beaten 1-0 at the Mbombela Stadium by AmaZulu, who continued their resurgence thanks to a second-half strike from Luvoyo Memela. The Rockets also ended with 10 men after a red card for Pogiso Sanoka.
In Polokwane, Royal AM saw their winning run come to an end with a 2-2 draw against hosts Gallants at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, though it felt like another victory for Thwihli Thwahla, who fought back from two goals down to salvage a share of the spoils and move to third place on the log.
The hosts went 2-0 up after 74 minutes thanks to strikes from Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo and Letsie Koapeng, but Royal struck back quickly through a Victor Letsoalo penalty, before an injury-time equaliser from Sedwyn George denied Gallants a first win of the season.
The DStv Premiership will continue with four matches this coming weekend, headlined by a clash between SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday 24 October.
