Defiant Zanaco this Saturday battle for their 2021/2022 CAF Champions League survival when they host Al Merreikh of Sudan in a pre-group stage, final leg match at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.
Zanaco, together with Red Arrows on Sunday, attempt to keep alive Zambian clubs’ continental interest following the preliminary round eliminated of Zesco United from the CAF Champions League and Kabwe Warriors out of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Zanaco head into their final leg date after losing 3-0 away to Al Merreikh in Cairo, Egypt on October 16 where the latter is playing its continental games after Sudanese stadiums failed to meet CAF specifications.
The Zambian club has been handed a mountain to climb by Al Merreikh and must score four unanswered goals at Heroes Stadium this weekend to pull off a dramatic group stage qualification.
“This is football and in football you get these different results in every game,” Zanaco coach Kelvin Kaindu said.
“So coming to tomorrow’s game and despite being down 3-0, it is still a 50-50 affair if we can take our chances. We also still have confidence and believe in ourselves.”
Despite Kaindu’s optimism, indicators are pointing in the direction of relegation to Novembers’ CAF Confederation Cup third round where Zambia’s group stage qualifying hopes are looking more promising this season.
Meanwhile, CAF Confederation Cup envoys Arrows are in action this Sunday in a second round, final leg date away in Angola against Premiero de Agosto.
Arrows face Agosto in Luanda armed with a 1-0 first leg home win and a draw this weekend will be enough to see them advance to next months pre-group phase of the CAF Confederation Cup.
