Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has expressed his delight at finally scoring his first official goal for Arsenal.
The Black Stars player, who has been on the Gunners’ books since October 2020, finally claimed his first goal for the English club on Friday night, opening the scoring in a 3-1 home win over Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Partey broke his Arsenal goal drought with a glancing header from Emile Rowe Smith’s 23rd minute corner kick.
Further goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Smith Rowe put the London side in charge, though Villa did claim a consolation strike through Jacob Ramsey late on.
“The team knew what to do. We had to keep fighting and keep our intensity. In the end with the quality we have we are able to get results,” said Partey after the match, as quoted by Ghana Soccernet.
“All the team was frustrated and we wanted a win. That was the mentality we brought to this game today and we were able to get our result.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment [the first goal] for a long time. I think it was the right moment to have it and I’m very happy.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was also happy for the midfielder: “Yes because he’s [been] chasing it for a long time, and he could have scored another two to be fair,” said the Spaniard.
“I’m very happy for him, I think he enjoyed that moment in front of our supporters and I’m happy for him.”
