Hamilton Academical striker David Moyo says he is hopeful of earning a place in Zimbabwe’s Africa Cup of Nations squad, but knows that he will have to perform at club level to do so.
The 26-year-old has just one Warriors cap to his name – alongside being named in a handful of squads in the past – so an AFCON call-up is by no means guaranteed.
Moyo says he wants to focus on scoring goals for Accies in the Scottish second tier, and hope that his club form is enough to see him appear for Zimbabwe at the tournament in Cameroon in January and February of next year.
“Of course the Africa Cup of Nations is a target,” said Moyo, as quoted by the Daily Record. “Everyone wants to represent their country. But I just want to score some goals right now and get climbing the table. We’ll see what happens with it. We’ll play it by ear.”
Moyo has netted once in 12 matches so far this season and he’s missed some games through injury. Head coach Stuart Taylor arrived in January to replace Brian Rice, who brought Moyo back into full-time football in 2019.
“The season has been a bit up and down,” said Moyo. “I got injured, so that wasn’t great on a personal level. I think that with everything, you have to take the positives.
“The tide will turn at some stage. We have to keep putting in the same amount of work we are just now.
“(Rice’s exit) was difficult for me, 100%. Now it’s just about transitioning and taking in the new gaffer’s philosophies. I seem to have fitted into it well so far.
“If you ask any player, they just want to be playing passing football. That’s what you want to do – play football.”
