Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has expressed his delight at seeing his team claim a thrilling 5-3 win over Zamalek in the Cairo derby earlier this weekend.

The Red Devils put the White Knights to the sword at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday night, with an own goal from Zamalek’s Mohamed Gabal adding to a brace of penalties from Ali Maaloul and strikes from Mohamed Sherif and Aliou Dieng for the team in red and white.

Zamalek’s scorers were Mostafa Fathi as well as Ahmed Sayed and Achraf Bencharki – with the latter two netting late on to bring a little more respectability to the score line.

“We scored three goals in the first half and two in the second half. I wanted more, but we can’t have everything,” said Mosimane, as quoted by Ahram Online.

The South African tactician has come in for criticism in recent months after Zamalek claimed the 2020-21 Egyptian Premier League title, but he was more than satisfied to see his side rack up the first big derby win since a 6-1 thrashing of Zamalek back in 2002.

“We scored five goals. Maybe in Ahly’s history against Zamalek the team scored more goals,” he added.

When informed of the above-mentioned 2002 match, Mosimane replied: “Good days are back.”

He continued, “We got a good result, my players played with good spirit, we were tactically clever and we were a little bit smarter. We could find holes to move the ball inside.

“We scored five goals in a big game. I’m very happy with that.”

Ahly will look to continue their 100 percent record in the new season of the Egyptian Premier League when they host Al Mokawloon on Friday 19 November.
