Zambia hammered Mauritania 4-0 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification Group B match at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka on Saturday afternoon.

Therefore, Chipolopolo are placed second on the group standings – three points behind leaders Tunisia, who have a game in hand, while the Lions of Chinguetti remained fourth on the table with their hopes of qualifying having diminished.

Chipolopolo started the match brightly with their star striker Patson Daka looking lively as he made some dangerous runs into the Lions of Chinguetti’s box, while looking to grab an early goal in order to unsettle the visitors.

The Leicester City marksman had an opportunity to break the deadlock just nine minutes into the encounter, but he fired straight into Mauritania goalkeeper Babacar Diop’s hands after the Lions of Chinguetti’s defence was exposed.

Daka did get the goal he had been searching for four minutes after the hour-mark when he beat Diop with a decent finish to hand Zambia a well deserved 1-0 lead with Prosper Chiluya grabbing an assist.

The Mauritanian defence was struggling to contain Daka, who turned from goalscorer to provider as he set up his strike partner Fashion Sakala and the Rangers FC star scored to make it 2-0 to Zambia in the 37th minute.

The hosts were then awarded a penalty after Evans Kangwa was fouled in the box by Diop on the stroke of half-time and Sakala converted from the spot-kick to hand Zambia a 3-0 lead heading into the break.

El Hacen Houeibib and El Hacen Lembrabott were introduced by Mauritania coach Gerard Buscher prior to the start of the second-half as the Lions of Chinguetti looked to pull one back.

However, Chipolopolo continued to launch attacks after the restart and they extended their lead in the 63rd minute with Sakala completing his hat-trick with a fine finish to make it 4-0 to Zambia.

The goal sealed Zambia’s emphatic 4-0 victory over a hapless Mauritania side, who couldn’t seriously test Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata in the hosts’ goal-posts.
