Liverpool FC centre back Joel Matip has revealed the reason behind his solid defensive partnership with Virgil Van Dijk.
The duo started at the heart of the Reds’ defence as the team claimed a emphatic 4-0 win over Arsenal FC in an epic Premier League clash over the weekend.
Ibrahim Konate, Joe Gomez and Nat Phillips are also part of Liverpool’s central defence department, but Matip and Van Dijk have been the used pairing by manager Jurgen Klopp.
The pair are benefiting from the length of time they have been teammates, believes former Cameroon international Matip, though – true to character – he feels there is further space for improvement.
“I think we have many good centre-backs, but you get to know your teammate better with every match and understand how he will react,” Matip told the club’s official website.
“It’s a process that takes some time. If the two centre-backs have high individual quality and play together well, the results will be positive in the end.
“It’s a development that won’t happen overnight, but we’ve been playing together for quite some time, and I think we can build on that.”
The 30-year-old has managed to overcome his injury woes thus far this season having played 13 matches across all competitions.
He has started eight Premier League matches for the Reds this term.
