Nigeria have been dealt a major blow ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals which will be hosted by Cameroon between January 9 and February 6.
The Super Eagles’ star striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of Africa’s biggest football tournament after sustaining an injury during an Italian Serie A match between SSC Napoli and Inter Milan.
Osimhen was forced off injured Napoli’s 3-2 Serie A defeat to the reigning Italian champions on Sunday evening at the iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in the city of Milan.
The highly-rated marksman sustained a facial injury after colliding with Inter defender Milan Skriniar and Napoli have since released the following statement indicating that the player will be sidelined for three months.
“On Tuesday morning, Victor Osimhen was operated on his cheekbone and eye socket by Gianpaolo Tartaro, who was assisted by Dr Mario Santagata with Dr Raffaele Canonico also present,” a statement read.
“Titanium plates and screws were used in the operation. The player is doing well and will remain under observation for the next few days. “Osimhen is expected to return to action in three months.”
The 22-year-old player scored three goals in five matches during Nigeria’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification second round campaign.
He has scored nine goals in 17 international games for the Super Eagles since he made his debut for the senior national team in June 2017.
