Mariam Dao Gabala, the president of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF), has backed the Elephants to win the Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament is scheduled to get underway on 9 January and run until 6 February, with Ivory Coast drawn in Group E alongside Algeria, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Rumours have emerged that the AFCON in Cameroon could be postponed, but Dao Gabala insists that Cameroon is on course to successfully stage the tournament.

“We shouldn’t be talking about postponing rumors this close to the tournament, everything is going according to plan, CAF confirmed that,” the FIF president said, as quoted by KingFut.

“We are preparing for the tournament, we will avenge our 2006 final defeat against Egypt and win the competition.

“Our current target is to win the AFCON, we have a special generation of players, they are getting experience in order to win the next AFCON which will take place in Ivory Coast in 2023 as well.

“Africa Cup of Nations is not just some football matches, it represents defending your country’s flag, it’s the biggest tournament in the continent and it shows that we have a lot of talents.”
