Fit-again Ngwenya shining in Power's revival

Fit-again Power Dynamos midfielder and captain Godfrey Ngwenya reflects on his flourishing start to the 2021/2022 FAZ Super League season.

Ngwenya has been Power’s heartbeat in what has so far been a rough start to the season for the Kitwe-based six-time Zambian champions.

He has led by example as captain and is currently the clubs’ top scorer after quietly scoring 7 goals as Power toiled from bottom of the log to mid-table after thirteen rounds of matches played.

The 25-year-old has also filled some big boots as captain at Arthur Davies Stadium since his predecessor Benson Sakala left as a free agent at the close of last season to join Czech side Viktoria Zizkov.

Sakala too had a hard act to follow just a season earlier when he succeeded midfielder Rally Bwalya as captain following the latter’s departure for Tanzanian champions Simba SC.

“I thank God for this fitness. From the moment that I was injured I have been trying to come back. I have been pushing stronger and harder with the hard work that I have been putting in training,” Ngwenya said.

“I think I have stabilized now and my injury is a thing of the past.”

It hasn’t been an easy last three years for Ngwenya in which period he suffered two huge injury setbacks.

The first one came in January 2018 that saw Ngwenya dropped on the eve of departure for the CHAN tournament in Morocco at Chipolopolo’s transit camp in Johannesburg in what would have been his debut Chipolopolo tournament appearance to date.

Ngwenya’s next setback came in February 2019 in league action that led to another lengthy spell on the sidelines after later undergoing surgery in June of that same year in India.

Interestingly, Ngwenya’s return to form has seen him score a goal more than his ex-Power club mate and striker Alex Ngonga with whom he travelled to India for surgery.

Ngonga left Power a disillusioned soul following his recovery in April 2021 after not fitting into ex-coach Perry Mutapa’s plans and made the short trip across the Ndola-Kitwe Dual Carriageway to join arch-foes Nkana where his 8 goals last term saved the record 13-time Zambian champions from demotion.

Meanwhile, the two renaissance men will share the same stage on December 12 in Kitwe.

Sadly, they will have to put friendship aside when Ngonga’s Nkana host Ngwenya’s Power in the first installment of the 2021/2022 seasons big Kitwe derby.
