Former Senegalese international Habib Beye says that compatriot and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy should have won the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or ceremony earlier this week.

The Yashin trophy, named in honour of legendary Russian Lev Yashin, is awarded to the best goalkeeper of the year, and the 2021 prize went the way of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italian won the trophy on the back of strong performances for Italy at UEFA Euro 2020, as well as his work for AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

Mendy was seen as a strong contender for the prize, having kept 16 clean sheets in his 31 Premier League outings for the Blues and another nine in the UEFA Champions League as Thomas Tuchel’s men won the trophy back in May.

And Beye reckons that Mendy has been robbed: “It was already written… It is even written to FIFA when they tweet to put goalkeeper Edouard Mendy without his [national team] jersey. We must stop being hypocritical,” the former defender is quoted by Afrik-Foot.

“Mendy’s number of clean sheets is greater than Donnarumma’s. We rewarded a player for a month of competition and his season at Milan, which is not bad, but I think Mendy had a better season overall with Chelsea, plus the Champions League.

“Why value the Euro more than the Champions League? The exceptional year is 12 months, not a month of competition.

“And over twelve months, Mendy is the best goalkeeper in Europe. There is no debate. But he is African and Senegalese. And his selection does not shine as Italy can shine in the media.”
