Shepolopolo Zambia U17 has lifted the 2021 COSAFA U17 Women’s Cup in Lesotho after beating Botswana 4-0 in the playoff final.

Zambia won the three-team, round-robin tournament that was staged under the umbrella of the 2021 Region 5 Youth Games that Lesotho is hosting from December 1-13.

Jessy Zulu and Lucy Kajiya gave Zambia a two-nil halftime lead with goals in the 13th and 39th minutes respectively.

Lubasi Pumulo added the third goal in the 68th minute while Gracious Tailoshi scored Zambia’s final goal in the 70th minute.

It was Zambia’s second win over Botswana after beating them 3-1 in their opening preliminary stage fixture on December 2 and later defeating Namibia 2-0 on December 5 to advance to the final playoff round.

The tournament had only three teams, particularly after Zimbabwe and Seychelles withdrew from the tournament citing Covid-19 reasons.

Zambia also took home three individual awards with the biggest one going to striker Pumulo Lubasi who won the Player of The Tournament award plus a dream trip to Spain for a one week training stint with a LaLiga club.

Kajiya won the Golden Boot after scoring 3 goals while goalkeeper Chitete Munsaka took home the Golden Glove.

Tournament runners-up Botswana took home the Fair Play Award.

Zambia coach Kaluba Kangwa said it was satisfying to see results of their grassroots football development programme yielding results at the tournament.

“This is a great achievement especially that we have been working hard in the background,” Kaluba said.

“I am also happy to see our team win a lot of awards at the championship which is very important. It is also a huge motivation for the young players so that they should aim high wherever they go.”
