The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has moved to dismiss rumours that the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be postponed or moved away from host country Cameroon.
The emergence of the new Omicron variant of Covid-19 has brought about travel restrictions that will complicate both the arrival from and return of African players to their clubs in months of January and February of 2022.
Media speculation has suggested that the tournament could be postponed, or even moved from Cameroon to another location entirely – with Qatar, the host country for the next World Cup mentioned – but CAF communication director Alex Siewe says such outcomes have not been discussed by the organisation or Cameroonian officials.
“We can’t keep spending time dealing with rumours,” Siewe told BBC Sport Africa.
“We did not receive any other message or information from our leaders – nothing such as changing of dates or countries.
“We did not discuss such during all our last meetings. We are on site. We are working.”
The 2021 AFCON, which has already been delayed a year due to the pandemic, is scheduled to get underway on January 9 and run until February 6.
