Defending FAZ Super League champions Zesco United have jumped from sixth to second place after a 1-0 home win over Nkwazi on Saturday at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

The result sees Zesco replace Green Eagles at number two on goal difference but only for 24 hours before the latter hosts Prison Leopards in Choma.

Crawford Mwaba’s 15th minute own-goal handed Zesco the 3 points and their second straight victory after downing Lusaka Dynamos by the same margin on Wednesday away in Lusaka.

Saturday’s loss saw Nkwazi suffer their fifth successive league defeat as their free-fall continues.

Nkwazi are now 7th on 22 points after a two-month spell at number two.

Zesco have 24 points and are now six points behind leaders Green Buffaloes after 14 and 16 games played respectively.

Meanwhile, Buffaloes extended their poor form to four games after losing 3-2 at home to mid-table Buildcon at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.

Buffaloes have drawn two and lost two of their last four matches

The two sides went into the break tied at one-all after Gift Lukwesha put Buildcon ahead in the 6th minute and Buffaloes equalized in the 27th minute through Martin Njobvu.

The remaining three goals all came in a five minute spell after the restart to conclude the contest.

Tapson Kaseba put Buildcon ahead in the 46th minute and a minute later Kizito Keziron made it three-one.

But Paul Simpemba’s 50th minute goal for Buffaloes was not enough to save them from extending the drought as the first half of the season pacesetters begin feel the pressure of the usual suspects Zesco and Eagles closing-in behind them at the mid-way point of the campaign.
