Tuesday’s action in the DStv Premiership featured a 1-1 draw between ‘original’ Soweto derby rivals Swallows FC and Orlando Pirates, while Mamelodi Sundowns won again to stretch their lead to 15 points.

The derby at Dobsonville Stadium saw all the action in a fast and furious opening quarter hour, with the Buccaneers claiming the lead after just three minutes through Bandile Shandu (who netted for the second game in a row), before the Birds levelled via a Ruzaigh Gamildien penalty.

The team clad in maroon will feel encouraged by their performance against Pirates, having been the better side for large swathes of the match, though they continue to lack a killer instinct in the final third.

The evening matches saw Marumo Gallants and Cape Town City play to a 0-0 draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, while log leaders Sundowns claimed yet another win after they defeated Baroka FC 2-1 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The Brazilians looked to be in trouble when Kermit Erasmus was sent off just before half time, but Rivaldo Coetzee struck in injury time before the break to put them in charge.

Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele hit back through a superb goal from Richard Mbulu, but 10-man ‘Downs reclaimed the lead late on with a fine strike from Themba Zwane – their hold on top spot remains rock steady, while Baroka stay rock bottom of the standings.

The early kick-off in Durban saw AmaZulu record a seventh successive draw, though it was anything but a staid affair against Chippa United.

The visitors surged into a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Bienvenu Eva Nga (who has now scored in four successive matches), but Usuthu fought back to claim a share of the spoils thanks to a second-half double from Luvoyo Memela – while the closing minutes saw both teams spurn numerous chances to add to the score line.

The DStv Premiership will continue with eight matches spread from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 December, headlined by Mamelodi Sundowns hosting Orlando Pirates.
