Zesco United eye a return to the number two spot on Wednesday when they host Red Arrows at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The fixture is one of two mid-week matches involving Zambia’s 2021/2022 CAF representatives this season that are clearing their league backlog at the end of the knockout rounds of their respective continental engagements.
But Zesco and Arrows’ interest in this season’s CAF campaigns has ended following their elimination from the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively.
Zesco and Arrows both have two games in hand that they need to win those outstanding fixtures to stand a chance of a mid-season top six placing that will earn them a 2022 ABSA Cup qualification berth.
Zesco are fourth on 24 points after 14 games played and are three points behind second positioned Green Eagles who have an inferior goal difference.
Arrows are seventh on 23 points and are enjoying good domestic form and are currently on a four-match winning run.
That good run by Arrows is set to be tested by the defending champions who have looked promising after posting back-to-back wins last week for only the second time since the start of this season.
Arrows are winless against Zesco since 2018 and come into the match with three defeats and as many draws since then.
Furthermore, the two teams last meeting was at Levy Stadium in April last season that Zesco won 2-1.
