The DStv Premiership continued with a brace of games on Monday, headlined by a first loss of the 2021-22 season for champions and runaway leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Brazilians saw their unbeaten start to the campaign ended at 18 games thanks to a 1-0 reverse at the hands of AmaZulu at a wet Kings Park Stadium in Durban.
The result – which was secured by a second-half strike from substitute Augustine Mulenga – sees Usuthu extend their unbeaten run to 11 matches and rise to third on the log, level with second-placed Orlando Pirates.
The Brazilians nonetheless remain well in control at the top with a 16-point lead over the chasing pack.
The early-evening clash saw Pirates come from a goal down to defeat Marumo Gallants 2-1 at Orlando Stadium.
The visitors claimed an early lead via a Siphelele Ntshangase cross which drifted beyond the reach of goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane.
The Buccaneers then hit back and seized the initiative with a quick-fire brace from much-criticised striker Kwame Peprah, who netted in the 24th and 26th minutes to steer the Soweto side to just a sixth win from 18 league outings thus far.
The DStv Premiership will continue on Wednesday 22 December with six matches, including Kaizer Chiefs at home to Maritzburg United and Cape Town City visiting SuperSport United.
