Guinea handed harsh AFCON ultimatum

Guinea interim President Mamady Doumbouya has told the national team to bring home the Africa Cup of Nations trophy or pay back the money spent to prepare for the tournament.

The National Elephants kick off their adventure in Cameroon on January 10 when they take on Malawi, with matches against Senegal and Zimbabwe to follow in Group B.

The West Africans have only ever reached the AFCON final once, back in 1976 when they finished runners-up to Morocco, while the 2019 edition saw them exit at the round of 16.

However, Colonel Doumbouya handed Kaba Diawara’s squad a harsh ultimatum during his speech at their send-off ceremony.

“Bring back the trophy or bring back the money we invested in you. Period,” the military officer was quoted as saying by Soccer 24.
