Guinea-Bissau will look to record one of the great upsets in Africa Cup of Nations history when they face Group D rivals Egypt at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua on the evening of Saturday 15 January 2022, kick-off at 21:00 CAT.
The AFCON pedigree of the two teams could hardly be more different: Egypt are seven-time champions, while Guinea-Bissau are appearing in only their third tournament and have yet to progress beyond the group stage.
It really should have been a win for coach Baciro Cande and his team, with Pele missing a late penalty which could have secured a first-ever victory at the Nations Cup finals.
A performance of similar determination, but with better finishing, could really trouble Egypt, and the African Wild Dogs sniff a chance at a headline-grabbing upset.
“We were here with the goal of taking three points. We fought, it wasn’t possible. I think we will do better next time. We will work to win in the next game,” said Guinea-Bissau coach Baciro Cande.
Egypt, meanwhile, put in a disjointed display in their 1-0 loss at the hands of fellow heavyweights Nigeria, leaving them at the bottom of the group and in need of a quick turnaround if they are to advance into the round of 16.
“We lost this match but there are still six points up for grabs against Sudan and Guinea-Bissau in order to qualify from the group,” said the Portuguese.
In head-to-head stats, this will be the first competitive meeting of Guinea-Bissau and Egypt.
