Tunisia hammered Mauritania 4-0 in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group F match at the Limbe Stadium in Cameroon on Sunday afternoon.
The Carthage Eagles got off to the perfect start as they broke the deadlock just four minutes into the match and it was Hamza Mathlouthi, who grabbed an early goal.
The Zamalek right-back scored with a beautiful volleyed effort which beat goalkeeper Babacar Diop hand down to hand Tunisia a 1-0 lead after the Lions of Chinguetti had failed to clear their lines.
Mauritania were struggling to contain 2004 African champions, who were determined to return to winning ways after starting their Group F campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Mali on Wednesday.
Tunisia were soon 2-0 up in the eighth minute as Walid Khazri netted with a low shot after being set up by Anis Ben Slimane and the North Africans leading at the interval after dominating the first-half.
The Carthage Eagles continued their dominance after the restart and they extended their lead through their star forward Khazi, who grabbed his brace four minutes after the hour-mark.
The 30-year-old fired past Diop with a decent finish to make it 3-0 with Ghilane Chalali providing the assist and it was Khazi’s 24th goal for the Carthage Eagles from 67 international matches.
Mondher Kebaier’s side was running rampant with Khazri creating problems for the Lions of Chinguetti’s defence and he provided the assist when Ellys Jaziri netted to make it 4-0 to Tunisia in the 66th minute.
The goal sealed Tunisia’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Mauritania, who could not cope with the Carthage Eagles’ fast attacking football on the night.
