Injury rules out Hamdy for Sudan clash

Egypt defender Mahmoud Hamdy has been ruled out of The Pharaohs final Group D match against Sudan on January 19.


The Zamalek defender will miss the date against Sudan due to an injury he sustained on January 15 in Egypt’s 1-0 win over Guinea Bissau.


“Medical scans have shown that El-Wensh suffers from an anterior muscle strain. He will be missing the game against Sudan in the final game of AFCON’s group stage,” the Egyptian Football Association said in a statement.


Hamdy, who has started in Egypt’s last two Group D matches, was substituted at the start of the second half of the match against  Guinea Bissau and replaced by Mohamed Abdel Moneim.


Egypt must beat Sudan this Wednesday for them to finish in the top two of Group D and secure automatic passage to the last 16.


2021 AFCON GROUP STANDINGS


The Pharaohs’ are second in Group D on 3 points, three points behind Nigeria who advanced to the last 16 with a match to spare following a 3-1 win over Sudan last Saturday.


Sudan and Guinea Bissau are tied on 1 point each heading into their respective final Group D matches on January 19.
