Senegal emerged 2-0 winners over Cape Verde in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Last 16 match at the Stade Omnisports de Bafoussam in Cameroon on Tuesday evening.

The victory earned the Lions of Teranga a spot in the quarter-finals with Sadio Mane and Bamba Dieng scoring for the West African giants, while the Blue Sharks bowed out of the tournament.

The Lions of the Teranga exerted pressure on the Blue Sharks from the first whistle and they were unfortunate not to take an early lead. Mane rattled the woodwork with a thunderous curling shot just a minute into the lively encounter.

Mane and Pape Gueye were causing havoc for the Cape Verde defence with their sharp movement. The Blue Sharks were reduced to 10 players in the 21st minute after Patrick Andrade was sent off for making a reckless challenge on Pape Gueye.

Senegal upped the tempo following Andrade’s dismissal and goalkeeper Vozinha became a busy man. The 35-year-old did well to come out and gather a Boulaye Dia cross from the right before Mane could make contact with the ball and try his luck at goal.

Vozinha was then called into action a few minutes before half-time and he pulled a great low save to deny Mane from close range. The score was 0-0 during the half-tine which saw Senegal dominate possession without scoring.

Senegal continued to push for the opening goal after the restart and the Blues Sharks were reduced to nine players after receiving another red card. Vozinha was given his marching orders for denying Mane a goalscoring opportunity as the duo collided in the 55th minute.

Bubista, the Cape Verde head coach, was forced to introduce keeper Marcio Rosa as the Islanders looked to contain the West African side. However, Mane finally got the goal that he had been looking for when he scored with a wonderful strike in the 63rd minute to hand Senegal a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Sharks were under siege in the closing proceedings and Borges Diney came close to scoring an own goal from Famara Diedhiou. Joseph Lopy then had a chance to double Senegal’s lead, but he hit the side-netting.

Aliou Cisse’s side did double their lead in stoppage time following a quick counterattack as Diedhiou set up Dieng, who fired past Marcio to seal Senegal’s 2-0 win over nine-man Cape Verde on the night.
