Jesse Were left his ex-employers Zesco United wounded on Saturday when he struck a brace to hand Kansanshi Dynamos a 2-0 home win in Solwezi.
Were left the defending FAZ Super League champions on December 31 after they declined to extend the 32-year-old Kenyan strikers’ contract when it expired at the close of 2021.
It was a humiliating loss for Zesco where Were spent six years and won four league titles and left as the Ndola clubs’ record top scorer with 102 competitive goals.
The Kenyan striker scored in the 42nd and 83rd minutes to see Kansanshi also stay unbeaten under new coach Boyd Mulwanda in his first two games in charge in which he has collected four points.
Saturday’s result left Zesco facing the likelihood of losing second spot should third placed Green Eagles beat leaders Red Arrows this Sunday at home in Choma.
Eagles have 36 points, Zesco are on 38 points while Arrows lead on 43 points and if the latter wins on Sunday, they will open an eight point gap with eleven games left to play.
Meanwhile, Nkana sneaked back into the top four following a 1-0 home win over struggling Indeni and week after losing by the same margin at Chambishi FC.
Diamond Chikwekwe’s 20th minute goal at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe lifted Nkana from fifth to fourth on 36 points.
Nkana displaced their Kitwe archrivals Power Dynamos who lost 1-0 away to fourth from bottom Kafue Celtic on the same date at Edwin Emboela Stadium in Lusaka thanks to an Albert Kangwanda goal.
