Kaizer Chiefs’ underwhelming season continued when they were held 0-0 by Cape Town City as one of three DStv Premiership matches played on Tuesday 15 February.
The Soweto side were looking to bounce back from their weekend exit from the Nedbank Cup at the hands of TS Galaxy, but they were unable to assert themselves at Cape Town Stadium against a makeshift Citizens team which featured two debutants – impressive teenage midfielder Jaeden Rhodes and forward Mogamat May.
At the same time that Chiefs and City were cancelling each other out, Maritzburg United picked up a revenge victory over SuperSport United.
The teams met last week in the Nedbank Cup in a match which Matsatsantsa stole 1-0 with a late strike from Iqraam Rayners. This time it was the Team of Choice who tasted victory thanks to goals from Friday Samu and Rowan Human – which sandwiched an equaliser from Jesse Donn.
The day’s action opened with a late afternoon kick-off at Chatsworth Stadium, where Royal AM continued to make waves in their debut top-flight season by securing a 1-0 home win over rivals and fellow promoted club Sekhukhune United.
The bad blood between the teams stemmed from legal battles over which should have been directly promoted from the GladAfrica Championship at the end of last season. Sekhukhune also claimed a heated 1-0 win when the teams met in their first round clash back in November.
This time around, however, Victor Letsoalo’s 10th league goal of the season earned Thwihli Thwahla a revenge victory and further entrenched them in the upper reaches of the table (they ended the night in fourth).
The DStv Premiership will continue on Wednesday 16 February with two further matches: Stellenbosch FC v Swallows FC at the Danie Craven Stadium and Orlando Pirates v Golden Arrows at the Orlando Stadium.
DStv Premiership results, Tuesday 15 February
Royal AM 1-0 Sekhukhune United
Cape Town City 0-0 Kaizer Chiefs
Maritzburg United 2-1 SuperSport United
