Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane described their defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League as a sad result on Saurday night.

The defending champions suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to the South African giants in a Group A game which was played at Cairo International Stadium in Egypt.

It is Al Ahly’s first-ever home defeat to Sundowns, who scored the only goal of the match through Thapelo Morena in the 85th minute following a quick counter attack.

“Of course, we are very sad about the result. It’s a match that I didn’t want to lose. It’s part of football. These things happen in football,” Mosimane said on the club’s official website.

“I can’t blame the team. We had many opportunities to score. I always knew that if we had any threat it will come from counter attacks.

“I congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns on winning today’s game. I think we have to qualify through the hardest way. We have to try and win in South Africa. We can do that.”

Kennedy Mweene seemed to have handled the ball outside the box when he denied Ahmed Abdelkader and Mosimane feels Sundowns’ veteran goalkeeper should have been punished.

“I will always ask CAF to use VAR throughout the whole competition,” the accomplished South African tactician added.

“The opponent’s goalkeeper used his hand to save the ball from outside of the box. Also, I believe Tau was onside when he scored. However, we don’t blame the absence of VAR for the loss.

“We had many opportunities that we should’ve scored from. We can’t escape the fact that we played two games in the CAF Champions League group stage without scoring.”

The loss left Al Ahly on third place on the group standings – six points behind leaders, Sundowns but the former have a game in hand and the two teams will meet in the reverse fixture in SA on March 11.
