Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane has reiterated his plea for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to start making use of VAR in their club competitions.
This, after his side lost 1-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday when Thapelo Morena’s 85th-minute goal settled the CAF Champions League clash.
Mosimane pointed to two incidents during the Group A encounter where VAR would have proved useful. Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene appeared to handle the ball outside his area in the second half, while Percy Tau had a goal disallowed for offside.
The Red Eagles remain winless in the group and they trail the Brazilians by six points in third place, although they do have a game in hand.
“I will always ask CAF to use VAR throughout the whole competition,” the former Sundowns coach said.
“The opponent’s goalkeeper used his hand to save the ball from outside of the box. Also, I believe Tau was onside when he scored.
“However, we don’t blame the absence of VAR for the loss. We had many opportunities that we should’ve scored from.”
Mosimane added: “I think we have to qualify through the hardest way. We have to try and win in South Africa. We can do that.”
