Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane paid tribute to his team for their fast start against Al Merrikh in the CAF Champions League on Saturday as they emerged 3-2 victors at the Cairo International Stadium.

The Red Eagles hit the front after just two minutes through Mohamed Sherif, who doubled their lead on 34 minutes, although Tony Edjomariegwe pulled one back for the visitors just before half-time.

Elsamani Saadeldin then restored parity on 69 minutes, but an own-goal from Mustafa Karshoum seven minutes later handed the defending champions all three points.

Mosimane’s side moved up to second place in Group A and they trail Mamelodi Sundowns by three points ahead of the return leg in South Africa next weekend, with the Brazilians having won their first meeting 1-0 in Egypt.

Mosimane admitted the Sudanese outfit didn’t make it easy for his players, but felt poor decision making in the final third prevented the Egyptian giants from putting the game to bed.

“I’ve never seen my team so good in the first 10 minutes of a game like today,” the South African said in his post-match interview.

“Al Merrikh wasn’t afraid to attack us despite conceding a goal very early in the game. We had several chances to score but we made the wrong pass in the end.

“It was not an easy game. Thank God, we were able to score three goals and win the three points.”
