Egypt head coach Carlos Queiroz hailed his side’s fighting spirit following their win over reigning Africa champions Senegal on Friday night.
The Pharaohs took control of their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Lions of Teranga after securing a 1-0 win in the first-leg clash at the Cairo International Stadium.
Therefore, the North African giants avenged their defeat to Senegal in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final which took place in Cameroon last month.
Saliou Ciss’ early own-goal earned Egypt a narrow win over the West African side and Portuguese tactician Queiroz praised his charges for being brave.
“When it was necessary to defend as a team and fight, you saw one of the bravest Egyptians fighting on the pitch,” Queiroz said on Ahram Online.
“At a certain point of the game, it is normal in football that the team which is losing double their efforts. They start to put the ball forward and put pressure on our defenders.
“Our team was forced to regroup. With an amazing fantastic fighting spirit, we got back into the game and controlled Senegal and finished on top.”
The two African giants are set to collide in the second-leg clash at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium in Dakar on Tuesday.
The winner on aggregate between the two teams will qualify for the World Cup finals in Qatar.
