Huesca SD have announced that they terminated Nigeria international Kelechi Nwakali’s contract.
The 23-year-old midfielder was a regular for the Spanish La Liga Two side prior to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon where he represented the Super Eagles.
Upon Nwakali’s return from national duty, he was not considered for action by Huesca manager Xisco Munoz and the club has now announced that they have parted ways with the player.
“Sociedad Deportiva Huesca have terminated the contractual relationship maintained by the first team player Kelechi Nwakali with the Barca entity,” the club wrote in a statement.
“The club has informed the player of the decision to terminate the contract that united both in the current campaign but expired in June 2022.
“SD Huesca wishes Nwakali the best in his professional future.”
Nwakali was in his third season with Huesca and he made 19 appearances in the league this term prior to joining Nigeria’s camp ahead of the 2021 AFCON finals.
The gifted player started his career at the Diamond Football Academy in Nigeria and he went on to produce eye-catching displays at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup finals in Chile.
Nwakali won the tournament’s Golden Ball Award and he was signed by Premier League giants Arsenal, but he failed to break into the London side’s first team.
The Owerri-born player spent some time on loan at Dutch clubs MVV Maastricht and VVV Venlo, Portugal’s FC Porto B, before being sold to Spanish side Huesca in 2019.
He was loaned out to Spanish side Alcorcon by Huesca in the 2020/21 season.
