Courtois reacts to Mendy's error in Chelsea-Madrid clash

Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois has reacted to Chelsea FC goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s shocking mistake on Wednesday night.

Madrid thrashed Chelsea 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg match which took place at Stamford Bridge in London.

Mendy had already seen Karim Benzema bag a brilliant first-half double – before gifting the French striker his hat-trick goal straight after half-time.

Courtois stated that he has sympathy for the Senegal international. who has been in poor form lately.

“Yeah, that’s unfortunate,” Courtois, who was on the books of Chelsea between 2011 and 2018, said on Metro.

“There are things that happen unfortunately in football for us goalkeepers, you miss a pass there’s no one behind you who can save it.

“He gave Chelsea a lot of points last year, he helped them to win the Champions League, so I don’t think they will blame him too much,” the Belgian keeper added.

“But I understand for him it will be a hard evening but he will bounce back.”

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel had to defend Mendy after the team’s humiliating defeat to Brentford FC in a Premier League clash over the weekend.

Mendy will be hoping to make amends when they square off with Southampton FC in a Premier League clash on Saturday.
