Ghana’s Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong feels Asamoah Gyan can play an important role for the Black Stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals.
This is despite the legendary Ghanaian striker set to turn 37 in November this year which is the same month when the prestigious tournament is scheduled to kick off in Qatar.
Gyan, who is a former Black Stars captain, has been inactive since leaving Ghana Premier League club Legon Cities at the end of last season.
However, Agyapong insisted that the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 51 goals should be part of the West African’s final squad for the global showpiece.
“He is an old man, he is an old man… but he can motivate the team,” Agyapong said on Pulse Sports.
“His presence alone will make a difference, so when they are going and they send old players along to motivate them, it can be a gamechanger.
“So the role of old players like Asamoah Gyan cannot be discounted, they must be sent to boost the morale of the young ones. But from what I saw from the games against Nigeria, we can go far.”
The last time Gyan played for the Black Stars was at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and he is the top African goalscorer in the history of the World Cup with six goals.
Ghana have been pitted against Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay in Group H at this year’s tournament.
